If you are familiar with Starcraft 2, it is common knowledge that there are three races: Terran, Protoss and Zerg. Each has each own style of gameplay and feel to win. This Stracraft 2 guide will focus on a starcraft 2 zerg strategy.
There are lots of different Zerg strategies and tactics, however this article will focus on one of the most easiest and effective Zerg opener, and that is the Zergling Rush. The Zergling rush strategy is best executed on a Zerg or Protoss opponent. Executing on a Terran player may prove to be difficult and futile since Terran can quickly position their structures to wall off their ramp or base entrance.
This strategy is best used on smaller maps, and preferably 1v1 where you know initial position of the opponent. The simplest method of the Zergling rush is the “6/0″. You start with 6 drones, and what you do is not to make any drones, but you use the initial 6 drones to mine minerals and rush to a spawning pool. Once you hit 200 minerals, immediately mutate a drone into a spawning pool. Once the spawning pool is developing, make a couple of additional drones, and an Overlord. After the Spawning pool is done, you should have 3 larvae waiting. You mutate those 3 larvae into a 6 zerglings. Rally those Zerglings to your opponent base so it will immediately travel to your opponent’s base once they are done developing.
You must understand that this strategy may be simple to execute, however the initial attack must succeed at ending the game or do enough damage to put your opponent behind. If the two objectives fail, you are already behind in term of economy and production. It is best that you target the workers when your first 6 Zerglings arrive at your opponent’s base.
Surprisingly, the Zergling rush is also very effective in 2v2 if your partner is also a Zerg, and you both do the strategy. At these early levels, it is easy to overwhelm one of the opponents with 12 Zerglings. If they don’t wall off, it’s pretty much game from there. At these very early stages, most of the time they only have 1 or 2 offensive units defending the base, which proves to be no problem for 12 Zerglings.
Another version of a Zergling rush is delayed Zergling rush. You make drowns until 9 supply, and immediately make a spawning pool. Make an Overlord, and continue drown production. When Spawning pool is done, make about 8-10 Zerglings, and send them to your base, while making a Queen in your base to help your base.
The delayed Zerglingh rush may not be that fast, compared to the pure rush version. However, the strategy does not put you behind if your initial attack fails. If you’re initial 8-10 Zerglings arrive at the Opponent’s base, and it encounters heavy resistance, it is best that you back off. You will gain information on what type of units they are using, and react accordingly. From there you can proceed to the middle game.
